Congressman Larry Kissell

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Uwharrie Visitor Center. I hope you find the Visitor center helpful as you explore this amazing region of North Carolina.

Having grown up in Montgomery County surrounded by the beauty of the Sandhills and Uwharrie National Forest, I consider this area to be one of America’s most overlooked treasures. We have just about everything you could ever want – from beautiful forests and pristine lakes to rolling hills and rich farm land.  From the splendor of Uwharrie Point and Heron Bay to the roar of engines at Rockingham Speedway and Rockingham Dragway, the area provides visitors with an array of different landscapes and activities from which to choose.

Historic small towns populate the landscape, offering a relaxing rural lifestyle while remaining within a short driving distance of urban centers such as Fayetteville, Charlotte and Raleigh. Victorian Inns and antebellum homes decorate our communities.

The Uwharrie National Forest offers visitors many recreational opportunities.  Generations of North Carolinians have enjoyed the Uwharrie National Forest and surrounding areas and welcome you to do so as well.  My family and I have spent many wonderful days exploring the offerings of our region and hope you have as much fun as we’ve had discovering the magnificence of the Uwharrie.

What Happened 229 Years Ago at Colson’s Mill?

Celebrate the 229th anniversary of the Battle of Colson’s Mill on Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m. at the Fork in Norwood, NC as we commemorate the battle that took place there on July 21, 1780.

This event will be held in conjunction with the Fork Front Country Sporting Festival which is scheduled for Sunday, July 19.

Stewart E. Dunaway, author of several books pertaining to the Revolutionary War period in NC, will share information about the significance of the Battle of Colson’s Mill.  A formal wreath-laying ceremony will be conducted by members of the Yadkin River Patriots Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colson’s Mill Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution to commemorate the battle that took place within the borders of what is now the Fork Farm, south of Norwood, NC.  Later in the morning, tours will be conducted by volunteers from the Stanly County Historic Preservation Commission and Museum.

It all began in the spring of 1780. General Cornwallis’ victories in South Carolina had created enough excitement in North Carolina to inspire a loyalist force to emerge in the Yadkin River Valley under the leadership of Colonel Samuel Bryan.

About June 30, Bryan and nearly 800 men began marching south down the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Valley toward Cheraw, there to join up with General Cornwallis.

Fishbyte.net Web Site Reeling Visitors In

The Sandhills and Uwharrie regions have so much to offer visitors in the way of recreation, and a new web site is reeling in the anglers. Fishbyte.net LLC, based in Troy, NC, (www.fishbyte.net) is a web-based resource for fishing activities across central North Carolina. Since its launch in February of this year, the site has become the “clearinghouse” for fishing and lake information in the area in short order.

With information and schedules of nearly seventy clubs and groups on its pages, the Fishbyte.net staff covers eight to twenty fishing tournaments of all kinds per week from Lake Hickory to Jordan Lake. A large percentage of those are on the Yadkin Chain of lakes, including Tillery, Badin and Tuckertown. Traffic to the site has grown to 4,500 unique users per month and is still rising.

Denton Girl Produces Documentary About Threshers Reunion

DENTON, N.C. – Henry Ford liked the old barn at the Reid Plantation so much he offered to buy it. Owner A.C. Reid turned him down – and later sold the barn – and all of the buildings that were on the plantation - to farmer Brown Loflin. Today, you see them at the Southeast Old Threshers Reunion in Denton.

This is just one of the tales you hear on the new documentary, “Denton FarmPark: Living History,” produced by former Denton resident, Rebecca Jones. The 30-minute video was a project the 22-year old embraced while getting her undergraduate degree in Communications from Appalachian State University this year. A free public viewing of the documentary will be held on Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m. in the FarmPark amphitheater. Copies will be available for sale.

When Jones was in high school, she used to practice cross-country running at the FarmPark. “It felt like home to me,” she recounted. “And because my dad had grown up on a farm, I was somewhat familiar with old tractors and such. When it came time to do the video project, I thought it would be neat to tell Brown’s story – how he got the land, created the events and kept it all going.”

The History of Ellerbe Springs

The beginning of Ellerbe Springs dates back to 1820 when Capt. W.F. Ellerbe, owner of several South Carolina plantations, decided to invest in the legendary healing spirits of this area’s natural mineral springs. He bought 300 acres surrounding the springs and built a summer home here. After his death, his son inherited the property and continued the tradition of summer visits and winter fox hunts. After the Civil War, the Ellerbe family lost the property and it was sold at the courthouse steps. A group of investors bought it and built more than a dozen summer cottages and a boarding house.

The present Inn was built as a hotel in 1906 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ellerbe Springs developed into a widely known gathering place for dances, Fourth of July picnics and political rallies. A Presbyterian church stood on the hillside to the south of the Inn. Likewise, the Ellerbe Springs Academy, a well-respected private school, was located here. Sadly, the Great Depression took its toll on the famous resort. In 1938 the property served as a Girls Residence Center under the National Youth Administration using the hotel as a dormitory and training center. The property was rescued from destruction by Richmond County and later, in 1947, sold to the Boy Scouts of America. In the 1960’s, an Ellerbe man, Harris McRae, bought Ellerbe Springs. After his death, his family completely renovated the Inn, reopening as a “bed and breakfast” in 1988. J. Neal Cadieu Jr., former publisher of the Richmond County Daily Journal, purchased Ellerbe Springs in September 1991 and later sold it to Jim and Donna Lane in 2002.
